How to Train a Puppy

Hi there! We're excited to share some tips and tricks on how to train your puppy, featuring Brooklyn, our adorable 10-month-old Morkie. We've learned a lot through our experience of training Brooklyn, and we're happy to pass on our knowledge to you.

Start with the basics

When training your puppy, start with the basics such as sit, stay, come, and heel. These are the foundational skills that will set your puppy up for success in the future. It's important to be consistent and use positive reinforcement techniques such as treats and praise to encourage good behavior.

Brooklyn learned sit quickly and we moved on to stay, but it took a little longer. She's still learning come and heel, but with continued practice and patience, we're confident she'll master these skills too.

Be patient

Training a puppy takes time and patience. Don't expect your puppy to learn everything at once. It's important to break down training sessions into short, manageable periods and to reward good behavior consistently.

For example, we started with 5-minute training sessions and gradually increased the time as Brooklyn became more comfortable with the process. We also used a lot of treats and positive reinforcement to encourage her to learn.

Socialize your puppy

Socialization is an important part of puppy training. It's important to expose your puppy to different people, dogs, and situations from a young age. This will help them develop social skills and reduce the likelihood of anxiety and fear.

Brooklyn loves meeting new people and dogs. We take her on regular walks around our neighborhood and to the local dog park to expose her to different people and dogs. This has helped her become more confident and outgoing.

Consistency is key

When training your puppy, consistency is key. Use the same commands and techniques every time you train your puppy, and reward good behavior consistently. This will help your puppy learn faster and avoid confusion.

We use the same hand signals and vocal commands every time we train Brooklyn. This has helped her associate the commands with the desired behavior and respond more quickly.

Keep training fun

Training your puppy should be fun for both you and your puppy. Incorporate play and interactive games into your training sessions to keep your puppy engaged and motivated. This will help them learn faster and enjoy the process more.

We play games like hide and seek with Brooklyn's favorite toys, and use treat-dispensing toys to keep her entertained during training sessions. This has helped her enjoy training and look forward to the next session.

Training a puppy requires patience, consistency, and a positive attitude. By starting with the basics, being patient, socializing your puppy, staying consistent, and keeping training fun, you'll set your puppy up for success and enjoy the process too. And always remember it’s a process - Brooklyn is far from being fully trained, but she’s learning more each day! We hope these tips and tricks have been helpful, and we wish you and your puppy all the best in your training journey.
